How Can CBD Help with Anxiety?

Benefits of CBD: Anxiety Reduction

Cannabidiol, or CBD, is one of the many photocannabinoids found in the hemp plant and has been shown to help with many aspects of health and wellbeing. For decades CBD has had a lot of recognition for its vast positive effects on the nervous system. The most common alignments it has been shown to help is epilepsy, multiple sclerosis and nerve pain. In recent research it has been shown to help aid in the reduction of anxiety and help the user find a state of calm.

Anxiety is a general blanket term that covers a whole gamut of feelings from everyday worries and fears about life's many challenges, to crippling trepidations of triggering situations. These feelings are hardwired deep into out nervous system, as part of an adaptive system to keep our ancestors a live from an evolutionary past. Some anxiety disorders can lead to panic attacks, cause obsessive compulsive behaviors, and can trigger symptoms of PTSD.

The main way of combating these issues up until recent was a plethora of prescription drugs. Fortunately, numerous scientific studies—mostly on animals, but some on humans—have demonstrated that CBD can produce anxiolytic or anxiety-reducing effects. That’s because CBD appears to modulate the same systems in the brain as prescription anti-anxiety medications like Prozac and Xanax. Treatments for anxiety do a couple things. First, they can help increase serotonin levels in the brain by inhibiting the brain’s ability to reabsorb serotonin, which helps improve mood. Second, they can stimulate the brain to generate new neurons in the hippocampus ( part of the brain responsible for memory, emotions and ANS), where neurogenesis (regeneration of neurons) has been shown to reduce depression and anxiety.

A 2013 study in Current Neuropharmacology demonstrated the link between cannabidiol and neurogenesis in humans. And a 2016 animal study showed that CBD can produce a fast-acting antidepressant and anti-anxiety effect by stimulating serotonin transmission in the brain.

There are many reasons why one should try CBD for their anxiety. There still needs to be more research to further these claims, but it seems that the pendulum is swinging toward CBD as a great natural alternative to help treat and reduce anxiety.
